At a glance

  • Best time: December to April for dry weather; May and November for lower prices
  • Trip length: 4 to 5 days covers beaches plus the main mainland neighborhoods
  • Heads-up: hurricane season runs June 1 to November 30; book flexible rates
  • Budget: check resort fees, taxes and parking before you book a hotel

To plan a trip to Miami, start with three decisions: when to come, which area to base yourself in, and whether you need a car. For most first-timers, that means four or five days between December and April, a hotel in South Beach or Brickell, and no rental car until you want to leave the city.

When is the best time to visit Miami?

The best time to visit Miami for most people is December through April. That is the dry season, with warm days, lower humidity and the least rain, which is also why it is peak season: hotel rates are highest and big events such as Art Basel in December and spring break in March fill the city.

May and November are good shoulder months, with fewer crowds and lower prices. June to September brings heat, humidity and short, heavy afternoon storms. The Atlantic hurricane season runs from June 1 to November 30, with most activity from August to October. Book flexible rates and insurance that covers named storms.

How many days do you need in Miami?

Four to five days suits a first visit: two beach days, a day for Wynwood and Little Havana, a day downtown or in Coconut Grove, and room for a boat trip or an Everglades outing. With a week, add Key Biscayne or a road trip to Key West.

Where should you stay in Miami?

Stay in South Beach if you want the beach, walkable restaurants and nightlife on your doorstep. Pick Mid-Beach or North Beach for quieter sand and bigger resorts, and Brickell or downtown if you want city views, Metromover access and easier trips to the mainland neighborhoods.

Browse our Miami hotels by area, or go straight to South Beach hotels if you are set on Ocean Drive and Collins Avenue. Families often prefer Key Biscayne.

How much does a Miami trip cost?

The room rate is rarely the full price. Many beach hotels add a nightly resort or destination fee, taxes come on top, and overnight valet parking can cost more than a day of city garage parking. Always compare the total price before you book.

  • Parking: Miami Beach charges $4 an hour at South Beach street meters and $2 an hour in city lots, and the main city garages cap at $20 a day (rates checked October 2026).
  • Tipping: 18 to 20 percent is normal at sit-down restaurants. Many South Beach restaurants add a service charge automatically, so read the bill before tipping twice.
  • Transport: Metrorail and Metrobus cost $2.25 ($2.75 from January 2027) a ride, and the Metromover and trolleys are free.

Do you need a car in Miami?

You do not need a car if you stay in South Beach or Brickell. Free trolleys, rideshare and walking cover most visitor plans, and parking adds up fast. Rent a car only for the days you go to the Everglades, the Keys or Orlando. See getting around Miami for the full comparison.

Is Miami safe for tourists?

The main visitor areas are generally safe with ordinary big-city care. Keep valuables out of sight in cars and on the sand, and stay alert on busy weekend nights in the South Beach entertainment district.

Sun, heat and rip currents cause more trouble: swim near a staffed lifeguard tower and check the warning flags.

What should you pack for Miami?

Pack light, breathable clothes, a light layer for cold air conditioning, and sandals plus one pair of comfortable walking shoes. Add reef-friendly sunscreen, a hat, sunglasses and a refillable bottle. Add a compact umbrella in summer and one smarter outfit for upscale restaurants.

Questions
